I recently acquired a 8lb jug of CFE pistol. I have loaded 10’s of thousands RMR 115 g FMJ RN with HS-6 and CFE with good success and wanted branch out to the 124 g.

Digging around in my manuals I could not find a good data source for 124 FMJ RN and CFE pistol. I did find data on the Berrys hbrn which I think is going to perform differently because of the hollow base. I also found data using for the Hornady xtp bullet but again I am pretty sure the bullet profile is slightly different so OAL might be different. .

I think I will be okay at around 5.0 grains of CFE but starting to second guess OAL.

All this is to ask if anyone has loaded the RMR 124 g FMJ RN with CFE pistol? What powder charge did you use and where did you set OAL?

    Thanks in advance.

The load information you found will be sufficient for starting loads. As for OAL look at some other load data using the correct bullet and see what they set the OAL at. This why I own multiple books to supplement the online data.

What load have you found with CFE-P and the 115 RN?

I have been loading 5.0 gr and the 115’s to OAL 1.160, which now I am thinking is a little too long, and I may try pushing them in to 1.135″

I have loaded thousands of the 115g FMJ Rn from rmr with 5g of CFE p and an OAL of 1.100 with great results. Great accuracy from a CZ P10C with around 1100 fps.

I am loading the 124g at an OAL of 1.160 and I may shorten them a little and see if the fps increases. The first batch was at 4.8 g and I averaged 975 fps. I bumped the powder charge up to 5.0 but I have not test fired any of these yet. If that is okay I will reduce OAL to 1.14 and retest.

Sorry I did not see this earlier. I don’t look in here often.

Recently purchased some of the RMR 124 gr projectiles and since my press was already set up for the Berry’s 124 gr HBTPRN projectiles, I used that as my starting point. Used 5.2 gr CFE Pistol with OAL of 1.15”.

From Staccato P with 4.4” barrel, average velocity (10 samples) was 1133 fps with std dev of 12.5 with the Berry’s projectiles.
From Staccato P with 4.4” barrel, average velocity (10 samples) was 1127 fps with std dev of 13.6 with the RMR projectiles.

At 10 yards, the grouping of the RMR projectiles was slightly better (didn’t measure) but both were more than adequate for target shooting.

Also have some data through my CZ Scorpion with 7.72” barrel. Average velocity (10 samples) was 1221 fps with std dev of 15.2.

Given that the RMR FMJ are about the same cost as the Berry’s, I intend to keep using the RMR projectiles. So far have shot about 200 with this recipe, no loading or ejection problems with any of the firearms I have used them in.

    Hope this helps.

Robert Taylor. Thanks for responding. Very detailed and valuable information. I had similar results with 5.0 g of CFE at 1050 fps so I am going to fill up my ammo boxes with that recipe as I have over 3000 RMR 124 g. And a big jug of CFE pistol.

Thanks for your load information, Dworshak. I might try that one sometime.

Thought I would add this although you did not mention 147 gr. projectiles. I recently purchased 147 gr RMR RN projectiles for use in subsonic loads. Since I already had CFE Pistol powder in my powder measure, decided to try making subsonics with this powder first. Used 4.1 gr CFE Pistol powder with 1.15” OAL. Shot them through my suppressed CZ Scorpion (7.72” barrel) with an average velocity (11 samples) of 985 fps and a std dev of 14. The maximum velocity for any of these was 1008 fps which was still subsonic. No problems with cycling the gun or ejecting. Based on these results, I am going to make more of these and see if they continue to work well.

Just curious, what other powders have you tried for 9mm? I have used HP-38 successfully with 115 gr projectiles (Berry’s) but switched over to CFE Pistol when I started loading 124 gr (it was more available then).

    Robert,

My long time favorite for 9mm 115 g RMR FMJ RN was HS-6 but it has gotten hard to get and very expensive. Last I saw it was over $60/lb. I was loading these to 1100 fps, I found this to be an accurate, clean shooting powder, with very little smoke, consistently accurate, and zero muzzle flash. Over all I was very happy with the performance but decided it was time for a change. Honestly what prompted the change was a friend acquired two 8 lb. jugs of CFE pistol and sold one to me real cheap. If I remember my 8lb’er was $220.
