Small Rifle Primer / Small Pistol Primer

After reading several columns on substituting SRP for SPP I feel confident in with my trial. Results will follow. Let me know your opinion!!

I dont recommend it but, I have done it.
I have used Small Rifle in place of Small Pistol primes in the past and looks like I will need to do so soon. Do your homework, start low with a hard to ignite powder that can be loaded light, ball powder is best because its harder to ignite then flake powder. I have only done this with Accurate #2 for 9MM loads, 4gn under a 124gn projectile worked great.

Recent attemp revealed Win SRP’s did not reliably fire out of factory SIG p365 or G17. CCI 400’s function perfectly. YMMV

Small Rifle Primer performed well. No signs of excess pressure. Do more trials. Appears One keeps loads at minimum, primers should be fine. Certainly can live with the 4.3gr load for practice.

Early on in my reloading, I experimented with a lot of different “substitutions”. Way pre-web and mainly out of curiosity, not necessity. I had revolvers so I had not FTF problems with rifle primers in pistol applications. Didn’t have a chrony at the time, but found very little noticeable difference. Of course as with any change I did another load work up and only substitution I didn’t do was large rifle in large pistol applications (large rifle primers are .008″ taller than large pistol primers. No problems substituting magnum primers for standard primer, but my results were from a new load work up. Don’t know where I learned it, but “Reloading 101”, do another load work up any time a component is changed…

I have tried it in the past using Wolf branded primers. They all fired out of an H&K P30 but I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw issues with striker fired pistols.

Last 10k round in 9×19 I use srp from cci instead of spp. No any problem on: HK VP9, SIG 365 SAS and XL, Kriss Vector, Glock 17g5.
Powder: Winchester Auto Comp.
Case: Mix from range.
Bullets: RMR, Blue Bullets.

The only significant difference between SP and SR is cup thickness (hardness). SR have thicker cups in order to handle the higher pressures of rifle rounds. The thicker and therefore harder cups may be more difficult to ignite for some guns especially ones that have been modified with lighter hammer and striker springs. Most modern guns will not have any issues with SR primers.

My 2 S&W Shield’s nor my M&Pc liked smr primers. Had several ftf. But run through the wifes Shield EZ was flawless. Its hammer fired.
